As promised at the Great Lakes Congressional Breakfast Briefing last
week, I've listed the URL for the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy
http://www.oceancommission.gov/
At last week's Great Lakes Congressional briefing session, there was wide
agreement that the Great Lakes community needs to get involved in the Ocean
Commission process. The Ocean Commission's findings and recommendations
will set the course for many important programs and policy affecting U.S
coastal communities, including those in the Great Lakes.
The Commission's Great Lakes Regional Meeting will be held September
23-25, 2002, in Chicago, IL, but specific time and location are still to
be determined. For future details on this meeting, check:

The Oceans Act of 2000 (Public Law 106-256), an Act of
the United States Congress, became law on August 7,
2000, and went into effect on January 20, 2001. The Act
establishes a 16-member Commission on Ocean Policy to
undertake an 18-month study and to make
recommendations to the President and Congress for a
national ocean policy for the United States.
The Act charges the Commission to conduct a detailed
review of existing and planned U.S. ocean and coastal
programs and activities. The Commission is to provide
recommendations for a coordinated and comprehensive
national ocean policy on a broad range of issues, ranging
from the stewardship of marine resources and pollution
prevention to enhancing and supporting marine science,
commerce, and transportation.
The Commission has one member from a Great Lakes state (IL) - Ted A.
Beattie, President and CEO of Chicago's Shedd Aquarium.
