More Than 1,000 Macomb & Oakland County Residents
Expected to Participate in River Day 2002 Celebration

Dozens of community groups, businesses, and local governments across the
Clinton River watershed are sponsoring water-related events for people of
all ages as part of the fifth annual River Day on Saturday, June 8.
Activities include nature hikes, kids’ programs, flyfishing lessons,
riverbank cleanups, and storm drain stenciling.

In Oakland County, families can participate in a fishing festival at
Independence Oaks County Park, clean the riverbanks in Waterford, help
restore a native prairie in Rochester Hills, learn to flycast in Paint
Creek, stencil storm drains in Troy, or explore aquatic life in Stony Creek
at the Rochester Hills Museum.

In Macomb County, participants can learn about wetlands and wildlife at
Waldenburg Park in Macomb Township, see how a contaminated landfill was
restored to a thriving natural area in Shelby Township, learn to flyfish at
Sterling Heights Nature Center, clean up Canal Park in Clinton Township, or
take part in a fishing derby at Metro Beach.

A variety of new events are planned this year, including a site visit to the
sewage overflow facility under construction in Madison Heights, and tours of
the wastewater treatment plant in Warren. A total of 24 events will be held
over the weekend.

“River Day is an annual event for local residents to celebrate the
recreational opportunities that the Clinton River offers,” said Heather Van
Den Berg, Education Director for the Clinton River Watershed Council. “We
encourage everyone to come out and learn how they can protect and enhance
this valuable resource.”
