The Kalamazoo Community Foundation is hosting a Sustainable Community
Watershed Conference on September 30 from 11:30am to 6:30pm at Sherman Lake
YMCA Outdoor Center in Augusta, Michigan. It is entitled Greener Growth:
Integrating Natural Systems in to Site Development. The featured presenter
is Randall Arendt, a land-use planner, site designer, author, lecturer, and
an advocate of "conservation planning". Mr. Arendt is the country's most
sought-after speaker on the topic of creative development design as a
conservation tool. His work has been featured in leading newspapers and
periodicals including The New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, the
Wall Street Journal, Landscape Architect, Urban Land, the Amicus Journal,
the Smithsonian, and the New Yorker. Dustin New of J.F. New & Associates
will also be making a presentation on the use of natural systems in the
management of storm and waste water. There will be a panel discussion at
the end of the presentations dealing with challenges and opportunities for
success in the greater Kalamazoo area. The panel will be comprised of
planning consultant Ken Dettloff (Vice President of McKenna Associates),
Steve Busch (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality) and landscape
architect Bob O'Boyle (O'Boyle, Cowell, Blalock & Associates). Lunch will
be provided and attendees will have opportunity to review displays. Those
interested in contributing displays to the event should contact Andrew
DeGraves (adegraves@kalfound.org). Due to limited seating an email RSVP is
required. Directions will be provided upon request.
