WORKSHOP: BALLAST DISCHARGE MONITORING
DEVICES
-----------------------------------------------
The
Northeast-Midwest Institute’s Biological Pollution team will be convening a
workshop on Ballast Discharge Monitoring Devices to be held at the Western
Fisheries Research Center’s Marrowstone Island Field Station on the Olympic
Peninsula, Washington from August 12-16. The goal of the workshop is to explore
the utility of diverse monitoring systems for ballast treatment evaluation
through (1) reviewing and making recommendations of scientific monitoring
equipment that can be used to facilitate evaluation and monitoring of ballast
water treatment effectiveness; and (2) proposing shipboard protocols for using
these systems to measure biological effectiveness of prospective ballast
treatments and the residual risk presented by post-treatment water. The workshop
will include 15 participants from countries such as the US, Brazil, New Zealand,
Singapore and the UK as well as demonstrations from BD Biosciences, Beckman
Coulter, Fluid Imaging Technologies and Meridian Instrument Co. (demonstrating
Nikon). Please contact Nicole Mays (202/464-4010) for more
information.
