August 5, 2002

Stakeholders in the Prevention and Control of Aquatic Nuisance Species
in Michigan:

The draft text for Michigan's Aquatic Nuisance Species Management Plan
2002 Update is now available on the web site of the Office of the Great
Lakes at:

www.deq.state.mi.us/documents/deq-ogl-draftansplan.pdf

The updated plan summarizes accomplishments since the Nonindigenous
Aquatic Nuisance Species State Management Plan was first released in
1996 and presents recommendations for future prevention and control of
aquatic nuisance species in Michigan. The recommendations in the update
were developed by three committees of Michigan's Aquatic Nuisance
Species Action Team: Legislation and Policy, Information and Education,
and Research and Monitoring.

The text of the updated plan is being released to the public for
comment during August, 2002. All stakeholders in the prevention and
control efforts for aquatic nuisance species in Michigan are invited to
review the text and provide comment by September 5, 2002. Comments
should be directed to the address below.

The text will be revised based on comments received, with input from
the Action Team and committees. Release of the final document is
planned for October 2, 2002, beginning with the Michigan Legislature at
a ceremony in the Capitol rotunda.

Your input is important to revisions in the draft text. We look forward
to hearing from you.
