Abstract:
Data from lakes, the coastal zone and the deep ocean all indicate that the
vertical and horizontal extent of enhanced mixing near boundaries and
associated intrusions and mesoscale eddies will determine basin scale
fluxes of heat, solutes, and particles. Predicting these pathways is
essential for modeling ecosystem function in all of these systems, and thus
is significant for understanding the effects of global climate change and
for addressing issues such as the fate of nutrients and toxic materials
introduced into coastal waters. Internal wave fields, dissipation rates
of turbulent kinetic energy, and the coefficient of eddy diffusivity are
illustrated for lakes ranging from 1 to 350 km2. We use this data to show
when and where turbulence is enhanced, its relation to internal waves, and
implications for fluxes of biologically important materials.
