GLIN==> Great Lakes Binational Toxics Strategy December Meeting Announcement



MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT

Environment Canada and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency would
like to announce upcoming meetings of the Great Lakes Binational Toxics
Strategy (GLBTS) that will be held in Chicago.  A Stakeholder Forum and
Substance-Specific Workgroup meetings will take place on December 3,
2002. An Integration Workgroup meeting will be held on December 4, 2002.
In addition, on Monday, December 2, the Mercury substance-specific
workgroup will hold a meeting focusing on reducing mercury releases from
dentistry (see description provided at the end of this message).

Registration for the Stakeholder Forum and Integration Group meetings
will begin at 8:00 a.m. on both days, and the meetings will start at
8:30 a.m. These meetings will be held in the Lake Michigan room on the
12th floor of the EPA office at 77 West Jackson Street.
Substance-specific workgroup sessions will be held on the afternoon of
December 3rd. The Mercury and PCB workgroups will meet separately, and
the Dioxin/Furan and B(a)P/HCB workgroups will meet consecutively
(beginning with Dioxin).  Breakout rooms for the workgroup sessions will
be posted at the Stakeholder Forum.  A draft agenda for the December 3rd
Stakholders Forum can be found at the end of this message.  Please note
that this agenda is draft and may change.  A final version is expected
to be release in the near future.  An agenda for the Integration
Workgroup is still under development and will be may available soon.

Description of Mercury  Meeting on December 2nd:  The focus of the
mercury meeting on December 2nd will be exchanging practical information
about how State, Provincial and local governments can set up dental
mercury reduction programs.  Topics will include:

C     the potential benefits of mercury reduction programs in reducing
water discharges and mercury sludge levels,

C     issues of technology and infrastructure that affect the ability to
develop mercury reduction programs addressing the dental sector,

C     case studies of mercury reduction programs, addressing both
voluntary and regulatory approaches, and describing practical issues
that must be addressed in order to implement reduction.

This meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. on December 2nd and last until
approximately 5:30 p.m.  The meeting will be held in the Lake Michigan
room on the 12th floor of the EPA office at 77 West Jackson Street.  A
workgroup with representatives from various levels of government, the
dental community, researchers, nonprofit organizations, and academia is
developing the agenda.
