REPORTS:  STATE PROFILES ON MANUFACTURING

-----------------------------------------

Manufacturing continues to account for a disproportionate share of employment and output in the Northeast-Midwest region, thanks in part to the strength of industry in midwestern states.  A new report, available on the Institute’s web site, includes data on manufacturing employment and output, industries by size and specialization, productivity levels, and research and development.  The report analyzes trends for each of the 18 Northeast-Midwest states.  Individual state profiles can be accessed from http://www.nemw.org/mfg.htm. The full report is available at http://www.nemw.org/mfgstatefact.pdf.

BRIEFING:  SCIENCE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
----------------------------------------------

The National Council for Science and the Environment on Thursday, October 31, will host a briefing on the role of science in sustainable development.  Presenters will discuss a new initiative by the National Academy of Sciences, Environmental Protection Agency, National Council for Science and the Environment, American Chemical Council, and other partners to address science in support of environmental decision making.

Speakers will include Ambassador Richard Benedick with the National Council, Dr. A. Karim Ahmed with the Global Children’s Health and Environment Fund, Dr. Twig Johnson with the National Academy of Sciences, and Prof. John Dernback with the Widener University Law School.

The October 31 briefing will begin at 1:30 pm in 418 Russell Senate Office Building.
