                        Romancing the Sea Lamprey

The public is invited to the second free talk in the "Superior Science
for You!" speaker series, hosted by the University of Minnesota Sea
Grant Program.

On November 13 at 7 p.m. in the Duluth EPA Mid-Continent Ecology
Division, Gitchee Gumee Conference Facility (6201 Congdon Blvd.)
and November 14 at 7 p.m. at the North House Folk School in Grand
Marais, MN, Assistant Professor Weiming Li will present "Romancing the
Sea Lamprey."

Forget wine and candlelight. If you want to attract a female sea
lamprey, you've got to use the right cologne -- in this case, a sex
pheromone. Dr. Li, with the Dept. of Fisheries and Wildlife of
Michigan State University, will describe his groundbreaking research,
which yielded a purified vial of this super-powered sexual attractant
from a ton of water and is expected to lead to novel management options
for controlling this damaging invasive species in the Great Lakes.

A reception will follow the talk. This Lake Superior-related speaker
series was made possible by a grant funded under the Coastal Zone
Management Act by NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource
Management in conjunction with Minnesota's Lake Superior Coastal
Program.

Archives of last month's talk and more information about the series can
be found on the Web at www.seagrant.umn.edu/speakerseries/index.html.
