MANUFACTURING RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalitions and the House and Senate Manufacturing Task Forces on Friday, November 15, will host a briefing on the importance of research and development in the continued health of U.S. manufacturing. Substantial private- and public-sector R&D investments are needed for the manufacturing sector to increase productivity and efficiency. Speakers from DuPont Company, Carnegie Mellon University, and National Center for Manufacturing Sciences will discuss the current R&D portfolio and its implications for the future competitiveness of U.S. industry.
The November 15 briefing will be held in 2325 Rayburn House Office Building from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. Refreshments will be served.

SMART GROWTH AWARDS
Environmental Protection Administrator Christine Whitman on Monday, November 18, will present the 2002 National Awards for Smart Growth Achievement. The awards will recognize state, regional and local governments that promote and achieve smart growth. Winners will be announced in the following categories: 1) built projects; 2) policies and regulations; 3) community outreach and education; and 4) overall excellence in smart growth.
