The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Great Lakes Basin Ecosystem Team along
with the U.S. EPA's Great Lakes National Program Office, the new Great
Lakes Regional GAP Analysis Project Group,  and many partners are
collaborating on a workshop to discuss and help formulate products,
strategies, and actions to promote conservation of Great Lakes islands and
coastal near-shore habitats.

These will include the development of a framework for a model strategy for
both landscape level and local level Great Lakes island conservation; an
island and coastal habitats conservation ranking/prioritization system;
revising the SOLEC Great Lakes Islands Indicator Report; development of
coastal habitat classification, including a pilot Great Lakes Coastal GAP
Analysis; decision support tools and spatial database organization; a model
communication/outreach plan for Great Lakes island conservation; and
identification of actions and next steps to advance conservation of these
significant Great Lakes resources.

We would like to invite you to attend this workshop and assist us with this
very important step in conserving significant Great Lakes natural

ISLANDS WORKSHOP PRODUCTS
1) Framework for a Model Strategy for Conservation of Great Lakes islands
at both landscape and local levels(including draft GLBET Great Lakes
Islands Survey Protocols)

2) A Great Lakes Island and Coastal Habitats Conservation
Ranking/Prioritization System

3) Updating, revision of SOLEC Islands Indicator Report, including a
listing/inventory of Great Lakes Islands currently under conservation
protection through inclusion in NWR's, or other means; islands known to be
in need of priority conservation efforts

4) Inventory the databases available for island conservation - concurrence
on action plan for repository/access of this information; Preliminary
Guidelines for development of a classification system for nearshore coastal
habitats of the Great Lakes and inventory of the databases available for
coastal GAP anaylsis

5) Plan to improve the utility of the Great Lakes Islands Decision Support
System - including demonstration of the DSS, hands on opportunities
provided, follow up training and utilization opportunities identified

6) Development of a Communications Outreach Campaign Plan for Great Lakes
Island Conservation as a product, and development of a network of
communications specialists
