BRIEFING:  STATE BUDGET OUTLOOK AND MEDICAID

The Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition on Monday, February 10, is hosting a briefing on the state budget outlook and what it means for programs and services at the state and local level.  The session will look specifically at the Medicaid program and the measures states are taking to reduce the rate of growth in their Medicaid spending this fiscal year.

 

Speakers will be Ray Scheppach of the National Governors Association, Diane Rowland with the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, and Ellen Nissenbaum with the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities.

 

The February 10 briefing will begin at 10:30 am in 418 Russell Senate Office Building (the Veterans Affairs Committee Room).

BRIEFING:  PUBLIC HOUSING

The Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition on Monday, February 10, will sponsor a briefing with the National Council of Large Public Housing Authorities on the impact of the Department of Housing and Urban Development's financial problems on the activities of state housing authorities.  The session also will review broader issues of housing policy in the context of the president's fiscal 2004 budget.

 

The February 10 briefing will begin at 11:00 am in 2456 Rayburn House Office Building.

BRIEFING:  STATE ENERGY PROGRAMS

The Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition on Monday, February 10, will sponsor a briefing with the National Association of State Energy Officials on the Department of Energy's State Energy Program, Weatherization, and energy emergency preparedness.  The session, open to all, will begin at 4:00 pm in 2456 Rayburn House Office Building.  Speaking will be state energy representatives from New York, Massachusetts, Ohio, Iowa, and Michigan.

BRIEFING:  WEATHERIZATION AND ENERGY PREPAREDNESS

Senate staff are invited on Monday, February 10, to a discussion on energy emergency preparedness and state energy programs, such as the State Energy Program and Weatherization. The briefing, limited to Senate staff, will begin at 2:45 pm in 366 Dirksen Senate Office Building.

 

 

CONGRESSIONAL STAFF TOUR:

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY

The Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition and Senate Manufacturing Task Force on Thursday, February 20, be hosting a trip to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to learn about the agency's work to support U.S. manufacturing.  A bus will pick up staff on Capitol Hill at 9:00 am and return them at 3:00 pm.

NEW REPORT:  OUTPUT-BASED EMISSION STANDARDS

The Northeast-Midwest Institute last week released Output-Based Emission Standards:  Advancing Innovative Energy Technologies and organized a briefing on the topic.  Output-based standards (also known as energy-efficiency-based standards) are a means to recognize the air quality benefits of cleaner power technologies within environmental regulations.  Copies of the report and briefing materials are available at http://www.nemw.org/energy_hillbriefing020603.htm.
