BRIEFING: FEDERAL MANUFACTURING PROGRAMS

The Northeast-Midwest Coalitions on Monday, March 17, will host a briefing on federal programs that help the manufacturing sector remain competitive through the development and use of lean manufacturing, energy-efficient technologies, and assistance to businesses adversely affected by import competition.  Come and learn about these federal initiatives, what they do, and what benefits they provide.

 

Dr. Charles Wessner of the National Academy of Sciences will discuss the Advanced Technology Program (ATP); Kevin Carr of NIST will review the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP); Michael Greenman of the Ohio Glass Association will talk about the Department of Energy’s Office of Industrial Technologies; and Robert Velasquez of the Southwest TAAC will discuss the Trade Adjustment Assistance Program.  The March 17 briefing will begin at 10:00 am in 418 Russell Senate Office Building.

GREAT LAKES CONGRESSIONAL BREAKFAST

The Northeast-Midwest Institute and Great Lakes Commission on Thursday, March 20, will host the annual Great Lakes Congressional Breakfast.  Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-OH), and representatives of the region’s governors and mayors will focus on a Great Lakes protection and restoration initiative.  The breakfast will run from 8:00 am until 9:30 am in B-339 of the Rayburn House Office Building.  A subsequent issues briefing will occur from 10:00 am until noon in 562 Dirksen Senate Office Building.  To register for the breakfast, go to www.glc.org/greatlakesday.

GREAT LAKES APPROPRIATIONS

The Great Lakes Task Forces are circulating several letters supporting appropriations for Great Lakes programs.  The House deadline for the agriculture funding letter, which supports the Great Lakes Basin Soil Erosion and Sediment Control Program, is March 20.

ENERGY APPROPRIATIONS

The Northeast-Midwest House Coalition is circulating a letter to Interior Appropriations in support of the State Energy Weatherization, Office of Industrial Technology, Innovations for Existing Plants, Energy Information Administration, and Distributed Energy Resources programs within the Department of Energy.  To sign that letter, contact Olwen Huxley at the Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition.

Save the Date – The Northeast-Midwest groups on Friday, April 4, will host an economic development forum on opportunities within the 108th Congress to improve the region’s economic health.  The forum is for congressional staff, regional organizations, and economic development groups.
