GLIN==> Wisconsin comprehensive planning guide available

CULTURAL RESOURCE PLANNING GUIDE
Now Available

The Wisconsin Historical Society is pleased to announce the availability of
a new publication - A GUIDE TO SMART GROWTH AND CULTURAL RESOURCE PLANNING.
Community decision-makers, professional planners and local historic
preservationists developing comprehensive plans, as required by Wisconsin's
Smart Growth legislation, can use this guide to help develop the cultural
resources section of their plan.

By including cultural resources on the list of mandatory plan elements, the
law provides historic preservationists an important entry into the broader
land-use arena. Preservationists are starting to realize that decisions made
about transportation, zoning, and subdivisions often impact local efforts to
preserve a historic building, an archaeological site or a historic downtown.
The GUIDE was written to assist communities integrate their concerns for the
preservation of cultural resources into the comprehensive planning process.

This "element-guide" is one of several that have been produced in the past
few years to provide communities and planners needed guidance in developing
their comprehensive plans.

The GUIDE is divided into two sections. The first provides background
information about comprehensive and cultural resource planning. Also
included is an annotated outline of a recommended cultural resource section
and a full discussion about community-sponsored cultural resource surveys.

The second section of the GUIDE focuses on three types of implementation
strategies: educational, legal and financial. A full chapter is devoted to
each with a menu of options to consider.

A hard copy of the GUIDE is available free upon request by contacting Rick
Bernstein, at rabernstein@whs.wisc.edu.
The GUIDE is also available for download as a PDF, on Gathering Waters
Conservancy's website, under "Links to Other Resources."
