NORTHEASTERN AGRICULTURE DIRECTORS MEET IN DOVER

The Northeast-Midwest Institute on June 9 and 10 is conducting a series of workshops for state agriculture officials at the annual conference of the Northeast Association of State Departments of Agriculture in Dover, Delaware.  The theme of the workshops is “Federal Agriculture Policy and Farm Viability in the Northeast.”

BRIEFING FOCUSES ON BROWNFIELD

REDEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIPS

The Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition on Friday, June 13, will host a briefing on how the federal government, cities, and rural communities are partnering to redevelop brownfields.  Speakers will discuss local redevelopment efforts; how federal programs are helping communities clean up brownfields and spur economic development; and legislative proposals being considered in Congress, including the president's fiscal 2004 budget proposals.  The June 13 briefing will begin at 2:00 pm in 406 Dirksen Senate Office Building.

HOUSE PANEL APPROVES ALGAL BLOOM RESEARCH

The House Science Environment Subcommittee last week approved legislation providing $30 million to research algal blooms and hypoxia that threaten water supplies.  The new law, sponsored by Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-MI), directs the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to expand its research efforts to freshwater, including the Great Lakes.

BRIEFING EXAMINES NATURAL GAS SUPPLY

AND REGIONAL PRICE IMPLICATIONS

The Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition on Monday, June 16, will host a briefing on natural gas supplies and potential price implications for northeastern and midwestern states.  Speakers also will review options for ensuring natural gas at acceptable rates.  The June 16 briefing will begin at 10:00 am in room G-11 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.
