DAVID USHER, PRESIDENT OF THE SPILL CONTROL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA, FORMALLY RELEASED FOR PUBLICATION THE PROGRAM FOR

“THE HOMELAND SECURITY GREAT LAKES REGION CONFERENCE,”

SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 25-27, 2003 AT THE LODGE, SAWMILL CREEK RESORT, HURON, OHIO.

THE PURPOSE OF THE CONFERENCE IS TO PROVIDE STATE-OF-THE-ART INFORMATION FOR PREPARATION, RESPONSE AND RECOVERY IN THE EVENT OF A DOMESTIC INCIDENT, ENVIRONMENTAL THREAT, TERRORIST ATTACK, NATURAL DISASTER AND/OR COMMUNITY EMERGENCY. THE CONFERENCE WILL EMBODY PRINCIPLES, WHICH SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF INCIDENT MANAGEMENT THROUGH TRAINING AND RESOURCE IDENTIFICATION, IN ORDER TO OPTIMIZE INTEROPERABILITY AND COMPATIBILITY AMONG GOVERNMENTAL AUTHORITY AND PRIVATE SECTOR CAPABILITIES.

MR. USHER NOTED THAT THE PLANNERS OF THE PROGRAM MET THE CHALLENGE OF SELECTING A UNIQUE COMPLIMENT OF SPEAKERS TO HELP EMPHASIZE THE CONFERENCE’S PURPOSE AND THEME.

MR. USHER EXPRESSED DEEP APPRECIATION TO THE PLANNING COMMITTEE AND FOR THE STRONG SUPPORT THE PROGRAM HAS GARNERED FROM THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD, THE UNITED STATES ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY AND THE NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION.  HE WENT ON TO THANK THE UNIVERSITY OF FINDLAY, THE OHIO HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION, THE LAW FIRM OF BUCKINGHAM, DOOLITTLE AND BURROUGHS, BATTELLE MEMORIAL INSTITUTE, MARATHON ASHLAND PETROLEUM, SLICKBAR, ONYX CORPORATION, THE GREAT LAKES COMMISSION AND THE OHIO COUNTIES OF ERIE AND HURON.

“THIS CONFERENCE, WITH ITS EXHIBITS AND DEMONSTRATIONS, WILL SHOWCASE ABILITIES TOWARD PROTECTING OUR COMMUNITIES AND NEIGHBORS DURING THESE TIMES OF HEIGHTENED NATIONAL CONCERN.  NOW MORE THAN EVER WE APPRECIATE THE VALUE OF PROFESSIONAL CAPABILITIES AND THE “CAN DO” ATTITUDE OF HIGHLY TRAINED AND MOTIVATED INDIVIDUALS TO MEET DIFFICULT PROBLEMS.  WE WANT TO THANK, AS WELL, THOSE WHO HAVE WORKED TIRELESSLY TO DEVELOP THIS PROGRAM,” SAID MR.
