Pennsylvania Sea Grant to Host Second Fish Tumor Conference Related to Great Lakes Areas of Concern
August 18-19, 2003
Penn State Erie Reed Union Building
Sponsored by USEPA GLNPO & Pennsylvania Sea Grant
Pennsylvania Sea Grant is hosting a second conference related to fish tumors and deformities in Great Lakes Areas of Concern(AOC). This is a follow up to the January 2003 fish tumor conference held in Erie, PA. The purpose of the second conference is to refine and coordinate the standardization of protocols developed by the fish tumor taskforce subcommittees that were formed at the first conference.
Conference participants will refine the existing standards currently being used in AOCs for this beneficial-use impairment and will learn more about the causative agents of fish tumors. Attendees will have the option of attending break-out sessions related to the refinement of monitoring criteria or histopathological criteria. A concept paper that outlines the taskforce's recommendations for standardized criteria for this beneficial-use impairment will be developed and presented to the International Joint Commission.
The conference will be conducted in a workshop format to encourage broad participation from attendees. Pennsylvania Sea Grant has recruited a panel of nationally recognized experts in the study of fish tumors and pathology to speak and interact with the participants at this conference. Dr. Paul Baumann will chair the monitoring sessions and Dr. Vicki Blazer will chair the histopathology sessions. The workshop is open to all interested parties and will be particularly important for members of public advisory councils in AOCs, local officials, and others interested in Great Lakes restoration efforts. Remedial Action Plan (RAP) coordinators are encouraged to attend even if they were unable to take part in the January conference. Members of organizations developing RAPs, Lakewide Area Management Plan members, as well as federal and state government agency personnel involved in the oversight and administrations of AOCs are urged to attend.
