GREAT LAKES MAYORS
Leaders of the Great Lakes Cities Initiative will meet in Chicago on Friday, December 12, to discuss ecosystem restoration legislation and to share information about best practices by cities. Chaired by Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley and a project of the Northeast-Midwest Institute, the Great Lakes Cities Initiative helps mayors and other local officials develop and advocate programs to improve the Great Lakes. Scheduled to participate in the meeting are Ohio Governor Bob Taft, who chairs the Council of Great Lakes Governors, and Reps. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) and Mark Kirk (R-IL). The Population Resource Center, Northeast-Midwest Institute, and California Institute for Federal Policy Research on Tuesday, December 9, will host a briefing on immigration. Speakers will provide the most recent demographic data on immigration to the United States including shifting countries of origin, changing geographic concentrations, and socioeconomic characteristics.
