FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OHIO LAKE ERIE COMMISSION SEEKING NOMINATIONS FOR 2004 LAKE ERIE AWARDS
Deadline for submitting nomination forms is August 6
Ohio individuals and organizations that have shown exceptional dedication
to preserving Lake Erie as the state's premier natural resource are
eligible to receive the 2004 Lake Erie Awards, according to the Ohio Lake
Erie Commission.
Each year, the commission honors one person and one organization that have
worked to protect and restore Lake Erie and its watershed. The annual Lake
Erie Awards program recognizes that effort.
Nine individuals and nine organizations have been recognized for their
stewardship of Lake Erie since the commission established the Lake Erie
Awards program in 1995. Nominating a person or organization for this award
shows special appreciation for those who work to improve Lake Erie and
support the goals of the Lake Erie Protection Fund.
Nomination forms for this year's awards are available by calling
419-245-2514 or from the commission's web site at www.epa.state.oh.us/oleo
. All nomination forms must be completed and returned by 5 p.m. on Friday,
August 6, in order to be eligible for consideration. Winners will be
announced during the 2004 Coastweeks observance, August 21 to September 19.
The Ohio Lake Erie Commission is comprised of the directors of the Ohio
departments of the environmental protection agency, natural resources,
transportation, development, health and agriculture. It was established for
the purpose of preserving Lake Erie's natural resources, protecting the
quality of its waters and ecosystem, and promoting economic development of
the region.
The commission oversees the Ohio Lake Erie Protection Fund (LEPF). During
the last 12 years, the commission has raised $8 million through the sale of
Lake Erie license plates. This money is used to fund LEPF grants that focus
on improving the quality of Lake Erie and to furthering the goals laid out
in the Lake Erie Protection & Restoration Plan.
