GLIN==> Toledo Coke Oven Mercury Emissions

A proposed, new coke oven battery with
240 ovens in 4 batteries is proposed to be sited on the Lake Erie
shoreline in Toledo on east Maumee Bay and will discharge 680
pounds of mercury per year according to the air permit application. This
facility is
being sponsored by a Michigan company...

U.S. Coking Group, LLC
7000 Fenkell Avenue
Detroit, MI 48238

There is a public hearing scheduled for Thursday night
in Toledo on granting this facility an Ohio EPA air
permit. The public hearing is on 5/13 at 7 PM at
the Oregon City Council Chambers, 5330 Seaman Road
Oregon, OH

Public comment deadline is May 24, 2004 with comments to

Matt Stanfield
Toledo Division of Environmental Services
348 South Erie St.
Toledo, Ohio 43602

This facility also will discharge significant amounts of
nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and particulate
matter upwind from Michigan areas that violate EPA's
health standards for ozone and particulate matter less than
2.5 microns. The applicant, Ohio EPA and Toledo
are rushing to try to get the permit issued before the
effective date of new requirements coming into effect June 15
that would provide more stringent controls for a facility
such as this coke oven.
