GLIN==> Great Lakes dredging moving forward

Detroit -- The 2004 dredging season for the Great Lakes has begun with
several projects scheduled and a few completed by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers, Detroit District.



Some of the harbors scheduled for dredging this year include, in Michigan:
Arcadia Harbor, Detroit River, Grand Haven Harbor (outer), Leland Harbor,
Little Lake Harbor, Manistee Harbor, Ontonagon Harbor, Pentwater Harbor,
Saginaw River (lower) and Saginaw Bay, St. Clair River and St. Joseph
Harbor; in Wisconsin and Minnesota: Green Bay Harbor and Duluth-Superior
Harbor.



The Corps is currently conducting dredge operations at Bolles Harbor,
Frankfort Harbor and Saugatuck Harbor, Mich.



The Detroit District completed the following projects already this fiscal
year: Holland Harbor, Mich., (outer) with approximately 27,000 cubic yards,
and Port Austin, Mich., with more than 18,000 cubic yards of material
removed.



The contractors/subcontractors for the projects so far this year include:
MCM Marine and KING Company Inc.



Detroit District manages 102 harbors in and around Lake Superior, Lake
Michigan, Lake Huron, the Michigan portion of Lake Erie and Lake St. Clair.
The Corps in Detroit also handles the connecting channels: Detroit River,
St. Marys River, and St. Clair River.



When dredging is successfully completed all materials will be placed in
confined disposal facilities, as beach nourishment, or in upland disposal
facilities.
