MMSD statement:  reaction to DNR referral to Department of Justice



            Statement from MMSD Executive Director Kevin Shafer,

       "DNR Secretary Scott Hassett is absolutely right about the urgent
need to sit down as a region and begin the challenging task of developing
long-term solutions to reduce sewer overflows."

            "There's no quick fix, or silver bullet to get rid of this
problem.  If it were that easy, we would have corrected the situation
already."

            "MMSD is already working on a $900 million Overflow Reduction
Plan that must be completed by 2010.  The challenge now is to develop other
cost effective solutions, above and beyond the Overflow Reduction Plan, that
will help protect and improve water quality.  MMSD is already working on
that initiative as well with a multi-million dollar long-range planning
effort for the year 2020."

            "Studies and planning are only part of the solution.  Positive
progress also demands action from each and every one of our customers and
communities - a true regional approach."
