Assistant Secretary Lynn Scarlett to Join Governor Kernan to
announce historic plan to restore Grand Calumet River corridor
Assistant Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett will join Gov. Joe
Kernan and officials from other federal agencies on Friday, Aug. 20, to
announce that eight companies have agreed to pay a record settlement to
restore natural resources in the Grand Calumet River and Indiana Harbor
Canal.
The event will be held in Marquette Park in Lake County along the
Calumet River corridor, one of the most heavily industrialized areas of the
country. In addition to the payments that will be made to fund restoration
projects in the waterway, the companies agreed to set aside land for
habitat protection
