BIOLOGICAL POLLUTION On September 12-14, the Northeast-Midwest Institute, in collaboration with the Delta Institute, Kestrel Management Services, and the National Wildlife Federation, will host a conference, “Addressing Biological Pollution in the Great Lakes,” at the Johnson Foundation’s Wingspread Conference Center in Racine, WI. This conference is part of the Great Lakes Biological Pollution Prevention Project, which is funded by a grant from the Great Lakes Protection Fund. By convening representatives from the maritime transportation industry, Great Lakes port authorities, and state and federal governments, the project aims to develop and implement a systems-based approach for preventing invasive species introductions to the Great Lakes from ocean-going cargo vessels.
LIHEAP The Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition is circulating a similar letter among House members. The signature deadline is Monday, September 13, and the contact is Michael Beckerman (202/226-9496). The House last week approved an amendment, promoted by Rep. Bernard Sanders (I-VT), transferring $22 million to LIHEAP and the Weatherization program. The amendment, adopted on a 305-114 vote, was to the fiscal 2005 Labor-HHS appropriation bill (H.R. 5006).
GREAT LAKES WATER QUALITY --------------------------------------- The International Joint Commission (IJC) on Tuesday, September 14, will brief the Great Lakes Task Forces on its 12th Biennial Report on Great Lakes Water Quality. For the past 24 years, the IJC has reported on the progress being made towards the goals of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement, which seeks to restore and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Great Lakes. The September 14 briefing will begin at 3:30 pm in room SC-4 of the U.S. Capitol.
