OHIO LAKE ERIE COMMISSION RELEASES
2004 "STATE OF THE LAKE REPORT ~ LAKE ERIE QUALITY INDEX"
and its Progress Report on improving Ohio's Great Lake
The Ohio Lake Erie Commission (LEC) announced the availability of Ohio's
2004 "State of the Lake Report ~ Lake Erie Quality Index" at their recent
quarterly meeting.
This report is a comprehensive look at Lake Erie that provides citizens
with information on present conditions of Ohio's Great Lake. The 2004
report is an update of the original Index, issued in 1998. Consisting of 11
indicators, the Index has become the cornerstone of the State of Ohio's
efforts to protect Lake Erie while identifying areas that need improvement
for the future health of the Lake's ecosystem and economy. The Index
establishes benchmarks, measurement systems and goals for consistent
evaluation of Lake Erie resources. It provides a factual basis for Ohio's
efforts to protect and restore our Great Lake.
Accompanying the release of the Index is the Ohio Lake Erie Commission's
Second Progress Report on how Ohio is meeting the goals of the Lake Erie
Protection & Restoration Plan, which is Ohio's long-term strategic plan to
improve Lake Erie and its watershed.
The Ohio Lake Erie Commission was created in 1990 to focus attention and
resources on protecting and restoring Lake Erie. The Commission is
comprised of the directors of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and
the departments of Natural Resources, Agriculture, Health, Transportation
and Development.
Copies of the 2004 "State of the Lake Report ~ Lake Erie Quality Index" and
Progress Report are available online at the Commission web site at
