I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Bihn earlier this year on the
fight over the Toledo coke oven. She is the former finance director
for the City of Oregon, OH.... and is a smart, tough, sophisticated
advocate.
==========================================
It is official. The waterkeeper alliance approved my application. I am
now the Western Lake Erie Waterkeeper. The sponsoring organization is
the Maumee Bay Association. There are many challenges in the western
basin including mercury, power plants heating billions of gallons of water
daily, fish kills in intakes, dredge disposal, algae, invasive species,
sewage and the list goes on.
The Western basin is the shallowest in the Great Lakes with an average
depth of 26' and Maumee Bay's sixteen square miles has an average depth of
5'. These are fragile vulnerable waters. The Western Lake Erie Keeper
will inventory the shorelines, attend discharge hearings, track spills and
followup with clean up. Keepers are about fish and water quality. I pledge
to represent this important watershed.
