Great Lakes Navigation Study
The House and Senate Great Lakes Task Forces, led by
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), are circulating a letter to the Army
Corps of Engineers requesting additional information about the
Navigation Study. The deadline for signing onto the
letter is Thursday, Jan. 20th. The contact is Joy Mulinex
with the Great Lakes Task Forces (202/224-1211).
Farmers’ Markets
Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) is seeking additional
cosponsors for HR 131, a bill to reform and increase funding for the Seniors
Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP). Introduced on
January 5, the bill would increase funding from the current level of $15
annually to $25 million in fiscal 2005, $50 million in fiscal 2006, and $75
million in fiscal 2007. The SFMNP awards grants to states,
territories, and tribal governments in order to provide low-income seniors
with coupons that can be exchanged for fresh, nutritious, and
locally-produced goods at farmers' markets, roadside stands, and
community-supported agriculture programs. The program
also benefits farmers by expanding direct marketing outlets and
increasing domestic consumption of locally-produced fruits, vegetables, and
other agricultural products. The contact is Roger Szemraj with Rep.
Kaptur (202/225-4146).
Gross State Product
The Northeast-Midwest Institute has updated its gross
state product tables to reflect the release of data for year 2002. The
tables include total GSP, GSP by selected major sectors, and sectoral
shares of state GSP totals. Tables on sectoral share include 11 of the 20
major sectors from the North American Industry Classification System. All
tables include data for the 50 states and the District of
Columbia.
The tables can be accessed at http://www.nemw.org/data.htm#business.
