Vallier Lecture Series:
Lake Michigan Water Quality and You
-- MMSD Executive Director to Address Issues Surrounding Milwaukee's Water
Quality --
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Kevin Shafer, Executive Director of the Milwaukee
Metropolitan Sewerage District, will talk about the many issues surrounding
the quality of Lake Michigan water, followed by a question and answer
period. The talk takes place at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, 1111 E.
Brown Deer Road, Bayside, Wednesday, January 19, at 7 p.m. Admission is $4
for FOSANC members and $5 for non-members.
Each and every one of us depends upon the water that comes from Lake
Michigan. It is the chief source of Milwaukee-area drinking water and the
final destination of all wastewater. We enjoy its sandy beaches and
impressive wildlife.
Yet with each new year, there are more people living in the Milwaukee area
who are needing more water. In addition, recent spring rains and the "deep
tunnel project" have resulted in raw sewage being dumped into the lake,
which has created much concern among local residents and elected officials.
Kevin Shafer Executive Director of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage
District will talk about the quality of Lake Michigan water and how MMSD
plans to address the concerns of local residents regarding water quality.
He will take questions from the audience following his talk.
Please join us for what is sure to be an enlightening evening. This will be
the first of two lectures dealing with this important topic. The second
will be in April featuring Dr. Jim Lubner of the Sea Grant Institute.
DATE: Wednesday January 19
TIME: 7pm
FEE: $4 members, $5 non-members
