GLIN==> Heavy Fine Particle Air Pollution Widespread Today in Michigan; Ontario declares alert



At 4 PM, air quality monitoring by Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality is showing air pollution that is
"unhealthy for sensitive groups" for Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids,
Saginaw, Port Huron, Ypsilanti, Allen Park and Dearborn
with the highest air pollution index showing for Port Huron, Allen
Park and Dearborn.

The high air quality index readings arise from high concentrations
of particulate matter of 2.5 microns or less.

"unhealth for sensitive groups" begins at 40.5 micrograms/cubic meter
on a 24 hour average for PM 2.5.    At 4 PM, MDEQ's web site is showing
the following 24 hour averages:

Grand Rapids   51.7
Lansing   44.7
Saginaw   46.9
Flint 45.9
Ypsilanti,   56.1
Port Huron   59.9
Allen Park    60.2
Dearborn   62.2

Allen Park had a 1 hr peak today of 89 ug/m3

Comparable heavy air pollution has been going on since Tuesday of
this past week.

Similar problems have been occurring in the last couple of days
in Minnesota.

Ontario just declared an air pollution alert throughout Ontario
including the transboundary area of Windsor to Sarnia.   See

* A Smog Watch means that there is a 50 per cent chance
that a smog day is coming within the next three days of
being issued.  This could result in higher levels of
fine particulate matter.

Spare the Air Actions
------------------------------------------

During a smog advisory, there are a number of actions that you can
take to help spare the air.

Travel tips - all year round:
 - leave your car at home - walk, cycle, carpool or take public transit
 - tele-conference instead of driving to meetings
 - limit car trips by doing all your errands at once, and do
   not let your engine idle
 - keep your car well tuned, check your tire pressure and
   drive at moderate speeds

Health tips:
 - avoid exposure to vehicle exhaust fumes
 - consult your doctor for specific health advice

Electricity saving tips:
 -  save electricity at home by turning off
    lights you are not using
