Job Opening:  Congressional Coalition LD

The bipartisan Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition is seeking a legislative director.  The individual would network with numerous House offices and work on a variety of issues important to the region, including economic development, ecosystem restoration, and agriculture.  The LD will work out of the offices of co-chair Rep. Steven LaTourette.  Interested candidates should email resumes to dickmunson@nemw.org.

Letter:  Manufacturing Extension Partnership

Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), George Voinovich (R-OH), Joseph Lieberman (D-CT), and Herbert Kohl (D-WI) are requesting signatures on a letter to Budget Committee Chairman Gregg and Ranking Member Conrad supporting $112 million in funds for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Program in the fiscal 2006 budget resolution.  The president’s fiscal 2006 budget proposes a 57-percent cut to MEP to a funding level of $46.8 million.  The signature deadline is COB Wednesday, February 23.  Contact:  Kris Sarri at the Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition (202/224-0606).

Briefing: Combined Heat and Power – Realizing the Promise

Combined heat and power technologies use energy lost in the generation of electricity for heat applications, improving efficiency dramatically.  Greater utilization of these technologies can significantly lower costs, ease demand, relieve grid constraints, and enhance security.  This briefing will quantify cogeneration’s potential, review what’s at stake, and outline barriers that need to be addressed.  Presentations will be given by Bruce Hedman, Energy and Environmental Analysis; Tim Daniels, New York City Economic Development Corporation; and Catherine Van Way, Cummins.

The February 23 briefing – sponsored by the Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition and the Environmental and Energy Study Institute – will run from 10:00 am until 11:00 am in 1116 Longworth House Office Building.  Contact:  Diane DeVaul at the Northeast-Midwest Institute (202/464-4009).
