Farm-to-School
Briefings
The Northeast-Midwest Institute and the Community Food
Security Coalition on Thursday, April 7, will host House and Senate
briefings on the Farm-to-Cafeteria program authorized in the Child
Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act. Pilot projects from across the
country will be discussed and used to highlight how this new competitive
grant program can improve both children’s diets and family farm
viability by assisting schools in overcoming the barriers to purchasing
locally-grown food.
The House-side briefing on April 7 will run from 11:00 am until 12:15 pm in 2456
Rayburn House Office Building.
The Senate-side session will begin at 3:00 pm in 428
Dirksen Senate Office Building. Contact: Allen Hance at the Northeast-Midwest

Manufacturing Letter
This week marks the deadline for House member to sign
the Dear Colleague letter requesting appropriations for the Manufacturing
Extension Partnership. MEP assists small and mid-sized
manufacturers. Offices interested in signing should contact Lisa Mark with the
Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition (202/225-5731).
Community Development Block Grant
– Luncheon Briefing
Reps. Steven LaTourette (R-OH) and Marty Meehan (D-MA), co-chairs
of the Northeast-Midwest Congressional Coalition, on Monday, April 11, will
sponsor a lunch briefing on Community Development Block Grants. CDBG
funds vital housing rehabilitation, supportive services, public
improvements, and economic development projects in communities
nationwide. Speakers will include:

Great Lakes Ecosystem
Health Briefing
The Great Lakes Task Forces and the Northeast-Midwest
Institute on Thursday, April 14, will host a briefing entitled “State
of the Great Lakes 2005: An Overview of Ecosystem
Health.” Speakers
– including representatives of U.S. EPA and Environment Canada
– will present a “big picture” snapshot of the current
health of the Great
Lakes ecosystem as well
as for each lake and connecting channel. The briefing will highlight
the forthcoming 2005 State of the Lakes report, which is based on last
year’s State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC).
