Gross State Product and
Employment by Sector – Tables
The Northeast-Midwest Institute has updated
state-by-state web tables on gross state product (GSP) and
employment. Tables for the latest gross state product data, from
2003, show state totals, levels for all 20 major sectors, and each
sector’s share of total GSP. GSP tables can be accessed at http://www.nemw.org/data.htm#business.
Tables for the latest annual employment data, from 2004, show state totals and
levels for eight major sectors, as well as sectoral shares of total
employment in 2004 and the percentage change in employment by sector from
1994-2004. Tables for non-farm employment by state can be accessed at
http://www.nemw.org/data.htm#employ.
Farmers’
Markets – Report
A new report by the Northeast-Midwest Institute reviews
the Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program's (SFMNP's) legislative
history and the USDA's proposed rule, the comment period for which ends July 25, 2005.
The report assesses the potential impact of these changes on existing state
programs and provides recommendations that would ensure continued
flexibility and innovation in program implementation. Click here to

Clean Water State Revolving Fund
– Letter
Reps. Steven LaTourette (R-OH)
and Marty Meehan (D-MA), co-chairs of the Northeast-Midwest Congressional
Coalition, are inviting members to sign a letter urging House conferees to
accept the Senate-passed funding level of $1.1 billion for the Clean Water
State Revolving Fund (SRF) in the Interior Appropriations Conference
Agreement for fiscal 2006. The House-passed level of $850 million,
which represents a 22-percent reduction, would have a devastating impact on
the ability of states and communities to upgrade their wastewater
infrastructure and meet Clean Water Act requirements. The
letter’s signature deadline is COB, July 19th.

Asian Carp – Legislation
Senator Mike DeWine (R-OH) and seven other members of
the Senate Great Lakes Task Force introduced the Asian Carp Prevention and
Control Act, companion legislation to H.R. 3049 that was introduced by Rep.
Mark Green (R-WI). These bills would amend the Lacey Act to list three
species of Asian carp as injurious wildlife and would prohibit the
interstate transport of live Asian carp. The bills are designed to
decrease the risk of an intentional introduction of Asian carp into the Great
Lakes or waters that connect with the Great
Lakes. Contact: Joy Mulinex with the Great
Lakes Task Force (202/224-1211).
Ecosystem Assessment – Briefing
Environmental and business leaders on Tuesday, July 19,
will discuss the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, the largest scientific
review of the condition and trends of Earth’s environmental systems
that provide water, food, timber, fiber and other services. Speaking
will be Steve Percy, former CEO of BP North America, and Jonathan Lash,
president of World Resources Institute. The July 19 briefing will run
from 10:00 am until 11:30 am in 2325
Rayburn House Office Building.
Manufacturing R&D Benchmarks
