Great Lakes Collaboration
The Great Lakes Task Force is circulating a letter among
House and Senate members to the Environmental Protection Agency and the
Council on Environmental Quality regarding the Great Lakes Interagency
Task Force (IATF) draft report. The letter thanks the
administration for its work on the Great Lakes Regional Collaboration
(GLRC) process so far and urges the administration to continue this
partnership and consider additional contributions to
restoration. The signature deadline is Nov. 2. Contact: Joy Mulinex with the Great
Lakes Task Force (202/224-1211).

Manufacturing – Letters
Reps. Nancy Johnson (R-CT) and James McGovern (D-MA) are
circulating a letter that asks the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee to
retain during conference negotiations the Senate’s $5 million for the
New England Manufacturing Supply Chain project. NEMSC helps small and
mid-sized manufacturers in the six New England states
to competitively meet the procurement demands of the Department of
Defense. The signature deadline is COB Monday, October 24.
Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Jack Reed (D-RI) organized a similar
letter, with ten signatures, in the Senate. Leaders of the Senate
Manufacturing Task Force also are asking CJS conferees to maintain $106
million for the Manufacturing Extension Partnership. Contacts: Lisa Mark with the House
Manufacturing Task Force (202/226-5181) and Ari Strauss with the Senate
Manufacturing Task Force (202/224-0606).
LIHEAP Amendment
Fifty-three senators last week voted for an amendment
that would add $3.1 billion to the Low Income Home Energy Assistance
Program (LIHEAP). While not the 60 votes needed to overcome a
budgetary point of order, supportive senators promise to introduce the
amendment on other funding vehicles.
Combined Federal Campaign
The Northeast-Midwest Institute – a non-profit,
501(c)(3) organization, financed by contributions from foundations, state
governments, federal grants, and individuals – has been approved
to participate in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the nation’s
largest workplace giving campaign. If you are a federal government
employee and would like to help support Institute's programs dedicated to
issues affecting the Northeast-Midwest region, please enter CFC code #0851 on
your pledge card during the annual fund drive. Thank you.
From Edison to Enron – New Book
Praeger Publishers has released From Edison to Enron, a new book by
the Institute’s Richard Munson that highlights the business of power and
what it means for the future of electricity. “This splendid
book,” said one reviewer, “is as readable as it is rigorous in
its fascinating journey through the creation and the evolution of the
electricity enterprise in the 20th century. What sets Munson’s
work apart is his probing exploration of the powerful and diverse
personalities who collectively shaped what has become the world’s
largest and most complex machine.” Click here to read more reviews
