Ocean Shipping in the Great Lakes:
Economic Boon or
Environmental Bane?
FOR RELEASE: Monday,
November 21, 2005
******************
WHAT: Expert Consultation on the Value of the Ocean Shipping
in the Great Lakes.
The press and the public are invited to participate as
a panel of independent transportation experts from across the U.S. will debate and discuss
controversial new results from a major study funded by the Joyce Foundation.
WHO: Study
authors Dr. John Taylor (Associate Professor, Seidman College of Business, Grand Valley
State University)
and Mr. James Roach (President, JL Roach, Inc.).
WHEN: Wednesday, November 30th, 2005, 1 pm to 5
pm
WHERE: Shedd Aquarium, Phelps Auditorium, 1200 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago.
Enter the South Group
Entrance.
WHY: Ocean
shipping has been targeted as a possible means by which invasive species enter
the Great Lakes through the discharge of untreated
ballast water. The Taylor and Roche study attempts to quantify the economic
benefits of ocean shipping compared to alternate modes of transportation.
Their report -- “Ocean Shipping in the Great Lakes:
Transportation Cost Increases That Would Result From a Cessation of Ocean
Vessel Shipping” – estimates a cost increase to industry of
approximately $55 million. The study also compares the benefits from ocean
shipping to the wide range of estimates of the costs of invasive species in the
Great Lakes. As policy makers make decisions
about how to regulate ballast water discharges from ocean vessels, an
independent assessment of the study findings will help make sure that decisions
are based on the latest peer-reviewed research.
