RE: 2006 Coastal Management Program Needs Assessment

The Wisconsin Coastal Management Program (WCMP) has completed a Draft Coastal Management Needs Assessment for Wisconsin's 15 coastal counties. The assessment's questions and the program areas are identified in guidance by the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) and include: Public Access, Coastal Hazards, Ocean/Great Lakes Resources, Wetlands, Cumulative and Secondary Impacts, Marine Debris, Special Area Management Planning, Energy & Government Facility Siting, and Aquaculture.

We invite you to review the Draft Needs Assessment at http://coastal.wisconsin.gov and welcome your comments and input to assist us in the development of the multi-year program enhancement strategy. When approved, the program enhancements identified in the strategy will utilize funding made available specifically for this purpose by the NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (http://coastalmanagement.noaa.gov/).

In coordination with other state agencies, the WCMP is in the process of developing a Wisconsin Great Lakes Strategy (http://dnr.wi.gov/org/water/greatlakes/wistrategy/) that parallels the federally directed Great Lakes Regional Strategy (http://www.epa.gov/glnpo/collaboration/strategy.html). The WCMP multi-year strategy will complement the Wisconsin Great Lakes Strategy and Governor Doyle's conservation agenda.

You are encouraged to provide written comments to:

The Wisconsin Coastal Management Program will be accepting comments through December 21, 2005.
