Regional Coastal Mapping Program to Begin in the Great Lakes
In an effort to promote regional stakeholder coordination, the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers is hosting a conference call on Thursday, March 2, 2006,
from 10 am to 12 noon (eastern) to discuss the collection of a variety of
coastal mapping data in the Great Lakes region in 2006 and 2007.
The program is known as the Regional Coastal Mapping Program and is managed
by the Joint Airborne Lidar Bathymetry Technical Center of Expertise
(JABLTCX). The airborne system will collect bathymetry (1000 meters
waterward of the land/water interface with a 4 meter resolution), topography
(500 meters inland of the land/water interface with a 1 meter resolution),
digital orthophotography and some hyperspectral imagery. These data sets
can be a major building block for future regional GIS databases.
Data collection is expected to start in May 2006 and continue through to the
fall. Additional data will be collected over the same timeframe in 2007.
It is hoped that data will be collected for much of the Great Lakes
shoreline in these two years. These data sets will be invaluable resources
for coastal zone managers for use in making sediment management decisions,
environmental assessments, shoreline evaluations, as well as other
determinations.
Representatives of the JABLTCX and the Corps will discuss the program, the
specifics of the data themes, and the planned priorities for the Great
Lakes. As this data will be useful to many agencies and studies, the Corps
invites you to join the call, hear about the program, offer any comments on
data collection, and look for possible collaboration with any of your data
collection efforts. Additional areas or data themes may be able to be
obtained at the same time, if cooperating partners and funding can be
arranged.
The call in number is 888-316-9406 and the Pass Code is 54814.
A web site has been established at http://www.lre.usace.army.mil/hh/rcmp
The powerpoint presentation to be discussed, specification sheets on the
data themes, graphics of areas to be surveyed, and call in information will
be updated on this web site prior to the call.
Additional information may be obtained by emailing Scott Thieme of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers at Scott.J.Thieme@usace.army.mil
