Cleveland conference to focus on Great Lakes maritime transportation
New initiatives aimed at modernizing marine transportation in the Great
Lakes/Seaway system, and making it more environmentally sound, will be
discussed at a binational shipping conference to be held in Cleveland
Wednesday, March 8.
Among topics at the annual Marine Community Day conference at Cleveland's
Downtown Marriot will be a new maritime industry coalition formed to
strengthen the industry's environmental policies and practices and develop
new standards of performance.
The Ottawa-based "Green Marine" coalition involves both U.S. and Canadian
companies and represents one of the Great Lakes shipping industry's broadest
efforts yet to address environmental issues.
New information will also be presented at the meeting revealing a much
lesser impact on Cleveland's air quality from marine diesel engines than
government studies had claimed.
Discussions will also include futuristic new research and development taking
place at the Great Lakes Maritime Research Institute in Duluth, Minnesota.
The institute is a newly created consortium of the University of Wisconsin -
Superior and the University of Minnesota - Duluth.
Participants of Marine Community Day include representatives of U.S. and
Canadian Great Lakes fleets, ports, labor organizations, and industries
served by Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway vessels, as well as U.S. Coast
Guard and Canadian government officials.
