2006 Carol A. Ratza Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship competition is open to high school seniors and returning
students who will be enrolled full-time at a Great Lakes college or
university in fall 2006 in a bachelor's, master's or Ph.D. program.
Applicants should have a career interest in electronic communications
technologies and their application to Great Lakes protection and
restoration.
Application deadline: March 31, 2006
ELIGIBILITY
A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student enrolled
full-time at a college or university in the Great Lakes states (IL, IN, MI,
MN, NY, OH, PA or WI) or Canadian provinces (Ontario or Québec) during the
Fall 2006 semester. The eligible student must have a demonstrated interest
in the environmental or economic applications of electronic communications
technology, exhibit academic excellence, and have a sincere appreciation for
the Great Lakes and their protection.
APPLICATION PROCESS
You can download the application form in either a PDF or MSWord format at
http://glc.org/about/scholarships/scholar.html. Applications can be typed or
handwritten. For typing, please download the MSWord file and save it to your
computer's hard drive before completing.
REQUIREMENTS
Students should include the following items with their application form:
1. A 500-word essay on creative new ideas for the Great Lakes Information
Network (GLIN) web site: www.great-lakes.net. Students are encouraged to
explore the GLIN site and then suggest new content areas and/or new
technologies they think would enhance the information and usability of the
site. In leiu of the essay, students may also submit a web page template,
which illustrates their ideas for GLIN. If the web page option is chosen,
students should provide a publicly accessible URL (for reviewers) as well as
a hardcopy of the web page(s).
2. Resume or curriculum vitae (CV)
3. Application and Letter of Intent explaining the student's career goals
4. Grade transcripts through the last semester of school completed
5. Two (2) letters of recommendation

should be directed to manninen@glc.org. Application deadline: March 31,
2006.
SELECTION CRITERIA
An award committee, comprised of Carol's family and colleagues, will
announce the scholarship recipient by May 1, 2006. The scholarship will be
awarded in a single payment at that time. The Carol A. Ratza Memorial
Scholarship is supported by donations and an annual appropriation of the
Great Lakes Commission.

The Great Lakes Commission, chaired by Thomas Huntley (Minn.), is a
nonpartisan, binational compact agency established under state and U.S.
federal law and dedicated to promoting a strong economy, healthy environment
and high quality of life for the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region and its
residents. The Commission consists of state legislators, agency officials,
and governors' appointees from its eight member states. Associate membership
for Ontario and Québec was established through the signing of a "Declaration
of Partnership." The Commission maintains a formal Observer program
involving U.S. and Canadian federal agencies, tribal authorities, binational
agencies and other regional interests. The Commission offices are located in
Ann Arbor, Michigan.
