The Isle Royale Institute and Michigan Tech University invite teachers to
participate in an institute at Isle Royale National Park June 19-12, 2006.
This one-week, field-based camping experience at Isle Royale National Park
prepares teachers to help students understand ecological concepts,
wilderness ethics, and cultural history through direct experience,
observation, activity, and discussion. The interactive course is designed
to provide elementary, middle, and high school educators with
standards-based professional development and time to plan, discuss, and
reflect on their teaching. Institute participants work in groups, sharing
their teaching experience and ideas with other educators.
The course is lead by an educator with extensive Isle Royale experience
and includes five nights of wilderness camping and backpacking, visits
with researchers in the park, and exploration of cultural sites and a
variety of terrestrial and aquatic habitats.
Cost: $450. The cost covers tuition and fees, course materials,
transportation from Copper Harbor (Michigan) to Isle Royale, six days of
food, and some camping equipment. Partial stipends are available for a
limited number of participating teachers from Michigan.
