Energy Efficiency
Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME), Jack Reed (D-RI), Arlen
Specter (R-PA), Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) are
seeking signatures on a letter to the Senate Energy and Water
Appropriations Subcommittee in support of increased funding for critical
energy efficiency programs at the Department of Energy in fiscal 2007. The
letter’s signature deadline is April 4. Contact: Ari Strauss with the
Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition (202/224-0606).
Advanced
Technology Program
Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Carl Levin (D-MI) are
seeking signatures on a letter seeking a $140-million appropriation for the
Advanced Technology Program (ATP). This amount equals the
Senate-passed appropriation for fiscal 2006. ATP is an industry-led,
competitive, and cost-shared program that provides grants to support
research and development of high-risk, cutting-edge technologies with broad
commercial potential and societal benefits. The letter’s
signature deadline is April 4. Contacts: Kevin King with Sen. DeWine,
Alison Pascale with
Sen. Levin, or Ari Strauss
with the Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition (202/224-0606).
Farm-to-Cafeteria Program
Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
are seeking signatures on a letter that asks appropriators to provide $5
million in fiscal 2007 for the Farm-to-Cafeteria program. By linking
local farms and school cafeterias, the program helps children to get
healthier fresh food choices at school and farmers to strengthen their
local markets. Contacts: Chris Saunders with Sen.
Leahy (202/224-4242) or Jessica
Foster with Sen. Specter (202/224-4254).
Trade
Adjustment Assistance
Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Jack Reed (D-RI),
co-chairs of the Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition, invite senators to
join them in asking appropriators to provide $16 million for the Trade
Adjustment Assistance for Firms. TAAF assists hundreds of mostly
small and medium-sized manufacturing and agricultural companies that
experience loss of jobs and sales because of foreign imports. The $16
million represents TAAF’s full authorized level. The signature
deadline is April 4. Contact: Ari Strauss with the
Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition (202/224-0606).
High-Performance Defense Manufacturing
Senator Joseph Lieberman (D-CT) is seeking signatures on
an appropriations request letter in support of the High-Performance Defense Manufacturing provisions
established by last year’s defense authorization bill.
This program is designed to help DOD develop and disseminate
new, innovative manufacturing technologies. Through this program,
DOD is directed to develop new manufacturing technologies and then to
partner with Commerce’s MEP program to disseminate them
broadly. The signature deadline is Monday, April 2, at noon.
Contact: Jamie Link
with Sen. Lieberman (202/224-7201).
Brookhaven Oil-Heat Project
Senators Olympia Snowe (R-ME) and Patrick Leahy (D-VT)
are seeking signatures on a letter seeking a $1 million appropriation for the
Department of Energy’s Oil Heat Research Project at the Brookhaven
National Laboratory. Brookhaven has been conducting a multi-year
research program to provide more efficient technology for heating oil
combustion. The research also is leading to the development of
ultra-low-emissions combustion technologies that will contribute to a
cleaner environment. The letter’s signature deadline is April
4. Contact: Ari
Strauss with the Northeast-Midwest Senate Coalition (202/224-0606).
