Lakes Tonnage
Tax
The House and Senate
passed legislation supported by the Great Lakes Task Force that
amends current tax law in order to allow Great
Lakes domestic shipping to
qualify for an alternative tonnage tax rather than pay the corporate
income tax from operations in foreign trade. The alternative tonnage
tax was first enacted in 2004 to increase the competitiveness of the
U.S. maritime industry, but
the law limited shippers to just 30 days in domestic trade. In
the Great
Lakes, U.S.-flag ships move
regularly between the U.S. and
Canada, exceeding 30 days in
domestic trade. The newly-passed measure specifically exempts ships
operating in the Great
Lakes from the limitation of

Energy Modeling
Roundtable
Congressional staff on
Monday, December 4, will meet with Energy Information Administration
officials to discuss how energy models can be made more useful for
policymakers. More
specifically, modelers and policymakers will review the desired
features of an updated energy model. The roundtable is sponsored
by the Northeast-Midwest Institute and the National Association of
State Energy Officials.
