Good Things Comes in Small Packages: Tiny Plankton Produce Oxygen Near Dead Zone
Ohio Sea Grant researchers Drs. George Bullerjahn and Michael McKay, biologists at Bowling Green State University, have discovered a microscopic plankton, Synechococcus, in Lake Erie's Dead Zone, that comprises upwards of 50% of the total chlorophyll in the Great Lakes and can also be performing up to half of the photosynthesis that occurs off-shore.
