Title:
"Partitioning Variation in Fisheries Data to Help Understand and Manage Aquatic Ecosystems"

Speaker:
Dr. Tyler Wagner
Michigan State University

Abstract:
Both biotic (e.g., differences in prey abundance and fish density) and abiotic (e.g., differences in water temperature and lake morphometry characteristics) factors contribute to changes in fish populations over time and space, and many of these factors are spatially and temporally dynamic. For example, temperature and management plans may vary annually, while others vary spatially due to lake-specific properties such as differences in productivity and prey species composition and abundance. Knowledge of the magnitude and source (temporal vs. spatial) of variation in fish populations has implications for not only understanding the underlying biology of a system, but also for fisheries management and for evaluating potential effects of anthropogenic and natural stressors on fish populations. Two examples illustrating the utility of understanding the structure of variation will be discussed, with emphasis on monitoring of fish populations and assessing the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on fish reproductive success.
