Great Lakes Water at Risk: Michigan Speaker to Discuss Compact
The Alliance hosts James Clift of the Michigan Environmental Council as he highlights pending landmark legal protections for Great Lakes waters during a special event in Spring Lake, Mich., Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m.

Clift is a member of the Great Lakes, Great Michigan Campaign, a coalition pressing for protections at the state level as part of a larger, regional push urging all eight Great Lakes states to adopt the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact.

“The compact and strong implementing legislation can return Michigan to a leadership position in Great Lakes protection efforts,” said Clift, policy director of the environmental council.

Once adopted by each of the Great Lakes states, the compact moves to the U.S. Congress for ratification. Illinois and Minnesota are the only states to have adopted compact legislation to date. In Canada, Ontario and Quebec are working on a complementary agreement.

“This legislation is critical to protecting Great Lakes water from withdrawals,” said the Alliance’s Jamie Cross, noting there are currently little to no protections preventing the water from being withdrawn to other states and regions. “The time to act is now, before entities outside the region look to the Great Lakes to solve their water shortages.”

The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled to be held at the Spring Lake Library. For more information, contact Anna Lang at 616-850-0745 ext. 11.
