Russian firm MMK America to construct a steel plant on the
Ohio River at Haverhill, OH that will emit over 1800 pounds of
mercury per year. That would be larger than all of the point and
fugitive mercury air emission sources in the United States as per U.S. EPA's
year 2005 toxic release inventory.
Public comment on draft air and water permits for the facility ends
March 27.
In addition, Ohio EPA presently intends to allow MMK America to
withhold as confidential significant information in the air permit application
about maximum process design and other process information.
