U.S.
Lake Survey Now Online Created
in 1841 by Congress, the U.S. Lake Survey was charged with conducting a
hydrographical survey of the Northern and Northwestern Lakes and preparing and
publishing nautical charts and other navigation aids. The Survey published 76
maps of the Great Lakes from 1852 to 1882. These rare historical documents are
held at several institutions, so accessing them online is a chance to view the
entire collection together. All
76 charts produced by the U.S. Lake Survey will be available in this online
collection by Fall 2008. You can explore 54 of these early Great Lakes charts
now. The
U. S. Lake Survey digital collection is a partnership project involving Wisconsin Sea Grant, Wisconsin’s Water Library,
the UW-Milwaukee American
Geographical Society Library, the UW Digital Collections Center,
and the Wisconsin
Historical Society Library and Archives. ~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^~^ Kathleen Schmitt Kline Science Writer Aquatic Sciences Center Sea Grant Institute and Water Resources Institute University of Wisconsin 239 Goodnight Hall 1975 Willow Drive Madison, WI 53706-1177 phone 608.262.6393 fax 608.262.0591 kmschmitt@aqua.wisc.edu www.seagrant.wisc.edu www.wri.wisc.edu |
