Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes
totaled 4.3 million net tons in June, virtually a tie with a year ago.
However, while Lake Superior loadings were up 21 percent, coal cargos out of Lake Erie were down 25 percent. The dredging crisis
again deflated the total. Even the month’s largest cargo was nearly
5,000 tons below the record set in 1997, a time when high water levels offset
the lack of dredging. See attached for more details.
