GLIN==> Public meeting for proposed Lake Superior NERR - Dec. 1, 2008

The Department of Administration's Wisconsin Coastal Management Program (WCMP) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will hold a Public Scoping Meeting on the proposed Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR). The meeting will start at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008 at the University of Wisconsin-Superior Multicultural Center, located in Old Main, Room 232. Parking is located off of Weeks Avenue and in Lot 7 on 19th Street in Superior, Wisconsin.

The purpose of the meeting is to solicit comments at the start of the process to prepare NOAA's Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Draft Management Plan (DEIS/DMP) on the proposed Lake Superior NERR. This process is anticipated to take 18-24 months. The Wisconsin Department of Administration's Coastal Management Program (WCMP) and NOAA are working to review potential reserve boundaries, how the reserve will be managed, and the policies of the proposed reserve. These decisions will be made through an analysis process and described in the reserve management plan.

The Lake Superior NERR is proposed to be administered by the University of Wisconsin - Extension (UWEX) in cooperation with partner landholders including the City of Superior, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and University of Wisconsin - Superior. WCMP and UWEX have developed an outline of a preliminary draft management plan which will be available at the meeting and online at http://coastal.wisconsin.gov. The outline specifies needs and priorities related to research, education and stewardship. At the public meeting, WCMP, UWEX and NOAA will provide a summary of the process for developing a DEIS/DMP and will solicit public comments on significant environmental issues that will be incorporated into a DEIS.

Interested parties who wish to submit suggestions or comments regarding the scope or content of the proposed DEIS/DMP are invited to attend the above meeting.
