Seaway Trail Corporation Elects New Directors

The Seaway Trail Corporation has elected its 2008-2010 board of directors to guide the membership-based not-for-profit organization that develops and promotes tourism and related economic development opportunities throughout the 518-mile freshwater shoreline region of New York and Pennsylvania.
 
The Seaway Trail is federally designated as one of America’s Byways and a National Recreation Trail. The byway region includes St. Lawrence, Jefferson, Oswego, Cayuga, Wayne, Monroe, Orleans, Niagara, Erie and Chautauqua counties in NY and Erie County, PA.

The outgoing directors recognized for their volunteer service with the Seaway Trail, Inc. Board are Bob Brown II, co-owner/operator of Brown’s Berry Patch, Waterport, NY; Carol Davison, Vice President, Archer Communications, Rochester, NY; Gary DeYoung, Executive Director, 1000 Islands International Tourism Council, Alexandria Bay, NY; Greg Marshall, Vice President and Director of Marketing, Greater Rochester Visitor Association, Rochester, NY; and Don Ryan, owner/operator, Chadwick Bay Marina, Dunkirk, NY.

City of Dunkirk Development Director Kory Ahlstrom says, “My professional interests often align with the interests of the Seaway Trail given the byway’s prominence as the major east/west thoroughfare in the city. The City’s Comprehensive Plan calls for focused development within the waterfront district directly served by the Trail. Projects include a boardwalk market adjacent to one of our Seaway Trail kiosks and a waterfront bike/recreation trail.”
 
Emily Beck is Director of Tourism Development for VisitErie, Erie, PA. She believes tourism visits will continue to grow as a result of new product development in the region. Erie is now a year-round destination with development of the Tom Ridge Environmental Center at Presque Isle State Park, the Presque Isle Downs Casino & Race Track, expanded Millcreek Mall, new hotels, a thriving downtown and active performing arts venues. The big city atmosphere with great tourism amenities combined with Erie’s small town hospitality and convenience is a great Seaway Trail hotspot for all seasons.
 
As Executive Administrator, Donald G. Bennett Jr. leads Campground Owners of New York, a for-profit trade association for private campground owners. He believes increasing interest in outdoor activities and nature study combined with the resources of the Seaway Trail freshwater shoreline region will attract increasing numbers of campers with tents, campers and RVs. Mr. Bennett holds a Seaway Trail, Inc. officer’s position as Treasurer. He is also a CPA in private practice in Pittsford, NY.
 
Jill Chamberlain is a Community Relations Specialist with the New York Power Authority (NYPA), Massena, NY. She coordinates many exciting special events at NYPA’s Hawkins Point Visitor Center. The Center was a stop on the 2008 Seaway Trail: Experience the Journey branding survey tour this summer and will soon have a new Seaway Trail kiosk installed there.
 
John P. Hall, R.A.I.C., is a principal with Cannon Design, a full service architecture, engineering and interior design firm with offices in Grand Island, NY, and eight U.S. cities. He expects to apply the firm’s ideas-based design concepts that are akin to concepts that support the Seaway Trail brand, e.g, Inventing the Future, Placemaking, Conserving the Environment, Enhancing Quality of Life, Building More with Less, and Creating Community Spaces. Mr. Hall holds a Seaway Trail, Inc. officer’s position as Vice Chairman.
 
Chuck Krupke, the current Seaway Trail, Inc. Chairman, has been a supporter of Seaway Trail, Inc. since it was established 30 years ago. He is a successful entrepreneur who has developed and operated diverse businesses, including an ice cream shop, motels and restaurants, in Pulaski, NY. Chuck has volunteered his leadership and strong business and tourism development skills to several efforts, including the Seaway Trail, Inc. board of directors and Oswego County tourism advisory and fishing advisory boards. Mr. Krupke holds a Seaway Trail, Inc. officer’s position as Chairman of the Board.
 
As Executive Director of Advancing Arts and Culture Buffalo-Niagara, Florine Luhr is implementing a community-wide strategic plan that includes tourism components for the Buffalo-Niagara section of the Seaway Trail. She previously served as Erie Canal Harbor Project Director with the Empire State Development Corporation. She believes in the power of sharing knowledge and resources and creating strategic plans to reach organizational goals.
 
Patricia L. McKeown is executive director of the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, an 800-member business organization. Her experience includes 12 years as coordinator of education/business partnerships for the regional BOCES, and time as a St. Lawrence County and Syracuse newspapers columnist, seven-county North Country regional ombudsman to former NYS Governor Mario Cuomo, and News & Public Affairs Director of North Country Public Radio.
 
Carlos Mercados’ KCM Services consulting firm provides management services for not-for-profits. He is an active member of the Greater Rochester Visitors Association Visitor Industry Council and recently chaired its New Markets Development Committee. His Rochester home is a designated landmark designed by Andrew Jackson Warner, who also designed the Erie County Building in Buffalo in 1872, Rochester’s City Hall in 1875.
 
Teresa Mitchell has served as Seaway Trail, Inc.’s Executive Director since the not-for-profit organization was established in 1978. A protégé of the late Dr. Vincent J. Dee, Sr., Teresa tirelessly carries on his vision for a shoreline travel route that extends the length of New York State’s freshwater shoreline and attracts tourism to support the economic well-being and quality of life in the byway’s 86 communities. She is looking forward to steering the Seaway Trail brand into a bright future.

As Niagara Tourism Convention Corporation President & CEO John Percy has been promoting his section of the Seaway Trail to markets to markets within a 250-300 mile radius. He recently told Buffalo Business First, “The strategy of targeting the bulk of the agency’s advertising dollars in markets within a few hours drive is paying off with big dividends, especially in tough economic times when people are looking for affordable destinations to get away to for a couple of days or so.”

Seaway Trail, Inc. welcomes August Schiava back to the fold. During his time as Executive Director of the Erie (PA) Area Convention & Visitors Bureau, Schiava championed the federal designation of the Seaway Trail byway as a National Recreation Trail. He is now Senior Sales Manager with Scott Enterprises: Hospitality & Entertainment Company in Erie. Schiava says, “I am excited to be Pennsylvania’s private sector representative to help with advancing the Great Lakes Seaway Trail mission.”
 
David G. White coordinates the Great Lakes Activities of New York Sea Grant and is serving as the Seaway Trail Revitalizing the Brand project coordinator. He also helped coordinate the 2007 Seaway Trail Shipwrecks Exhibit and Speakers Series that brought national attention to the byway and its hundreds of historic shipwrecks via an Associated Press article and earned Seaway Trail, Inc. an Upstate History Alliance Certificate of Commendation. Mr. White, a recreation/tourism specialist with New York Sea Grant, holds a Seaway Trail, Inc. officer’s position as Secretary.
