Revitalizing Older Cities

Capitol Hill Summit
February 11-12, 2009
Washington DC

Our nation’s older cities and towns have long suffered disinvestment and neglect. Restoring their vitality is crucial to the national economy. It is imperative that the new Congress and new administration recognize and act on this critical need.

This summit is an opportunity for activists, community organizers, civic leaders, elected officials, and all concerned citizens to learn about and discuss the vital links between federal policy and the revitalization of their cities and towns. The conference will demonstrate that federal policy can and does impact the prosperity of our nation’s historic industrial cities and towns – especially in the Northeast-Midwest region. Summit attendees will explore case studies, exchange ideas, and communicate to Members of Congress the message that the overall health of our nation is measured by the health of our cities.

The Northeast-Midwest Institute, working with its partners, the Brookings Institution, Smart Growth America, and Policy Link, is organizing the first annual Revitalizing Older Cities Capitol Hill Summit. The Summit is a collaborative effort with the Northeast-Midwest Congressional and Senate Coalitions and the Revitalizing Older Cities Congressional Task Force.
